Beakerhead 2016

  • 2 min read

Earlier in the fall we attended one of the coolest smash ups of arts, science and engineering the world has ever seen, Beakerhead, in Calgary, Alberta. This week long event brought over 130,000 people interacting with installations set up throughout the city, and the culminated in an epic evening Beakernight.

We were able to attend some of the incredible events, including Torched, which saw an industrial skatelab turned into an engaging evening of beatboxing, culinary expertise, electric cellists and an unreal art installation featuring the Lucky Iron Fish.

We also participated in Social Entrepreneurship Day, where the Lucky Iron Fish and two other social enterprises got to judge a Social Venture Pitch Competition. Alongside the expertise of Anna Stork, from Luminaid, and Stephanie Christensen, from ShelterBox Canada, we got to challenge some amazing social entrepreneurs about their ideas to change the world.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the Collingwood Elementary School to talk about the Lucky Iron Fish with some of the students. We gave a presentation to a gymnasium full of Grade 5 and 6s, and were asked some seriously tough questions! One of the students ended up finding out Impact and Engagement Specialist Lydia at Beakernight and helped educate people on the Lucky Iron Fish. Here is a photo of Lucas and Lydia!

We were lucky enough to be featured at Beakerhead with five other truly amazing social enterprises: Velometro, Survival Capsule, Autism Glass, ShelterBox Canada, and Luminaid. We could not have been in better company!

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the event, make sure to mark your calendars for next year. As for the incredible people who made the event possible, Beakerhead, Boom Goes The Drum and TRICO foundation, we are forever grateful for such an interactive, exciting and inspiring week.
