Why Women with Heavy
Menstrual Flow Need Iron
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting two billion people. Iron is an essential nutrient in blood, and due to blood loss during menstruation and increased blood supply demands during pregnancy, iron deficiency is more prevalent among women than it is men.
Though all women should be cautious about their iron levels, women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding – medically referred to as "Menorrhagia" – are at an even greater risk of developing iron deficiency than women with average menstrual blood loss.
One in five women suffer from heavy menstrual flow. You may have Menorrhagia if it is typical for you to soak through a single tampon or sanitary pad every two hours or less, for several consecutive hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the following as symptoms of Menorrhagia:
Menstrual period lasting more than seven days
Menstrual flow with blood clots the size of a quarter or larger
Needing to use more than one sanitary pad at a time to manage blood loss
Needing to change sanitary pads or tampons during the night
Constant lower stomach pain during periods
There are many reasons a woman may suffer from excessively heavy blood loss during menstruation. If you suspect that your periods are abnormally heavy, it is important to speak with your doctor. If your iron levels are low, know that there are ways to replace some of the iron lost through heavy periods. The Lucky Iron Fish can be used throughout your entire cycle, keeping your iron stores high so they can better deal with times of stress, such as during your period.

What is the Lucky Iron Fish?
The Lucky Iron Fish is a palm-sized, fish-shaped cooking tool made of natural iron that your body can easily absorb. Clinical research shows that consistent use of the Fish over 3-12 months increases levels of circulating and stored iron. Our trials found that women reported feeling better within three months of use. We also found positive changes in blood iron levels after six months of continual use.
When used as directed (boiled for 10 minutes in slightly acidified water), the Fish releases a safe and consistent amount of iron (4-7mg). The Lucky Iron Fish will not change the taste, colour, or smell of the water or dish you are cooking, unless misused. The Fish also will not cause side effects typically associated with conventional iron supplements, like digestive discomfort.
We recommend using the Lucky Iron Fish daily, or at least three times per week, over the course of 3-12 months. It is important to note that your daily recommended intake of iron will vary based on your age, dietary habits, and health status. If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, take extra care to ensure your iron stores are adequate.
The Lucky Iron Fish is:
A safe way to add iron to your diet, without side effects like constipation or nausea
Made from natural bioavailable iron
Reusable for up to five years
Thoroughly tested – in addition to batch testing, third party laboratories conduct random spot tests
An affordable alternative to conventional iron supplements (tablets)
How to use the Lucky Iron Fish
There are many ways to use the Lucky Iron Fish. Most people like to make Lucky Iron Fish Water because it is fast and easy. Boiling the Fish in one litre of water with 2-3 drops of acidity (e.g., fresh lemon juice or vinegar) for ten minutes yields iron-enriched water that can be used in a variety of recipes, or enjoyed chilled, as a substitute for plain drinking water. You can also easily use the Fish when cooking curry, tomato sauce, soup, quinoa, and more. Visit our recipes page for inspiration on how to get the most from your Fish in the kitchen. Our Menstruation Tea recipe is just one of many ways to use the Lucky Iron Fish.
To maximize the five-year life span of the Fish, it is important to properly care for it. Before each use, wash the Fish with soap and water. This will help ensure the Fish does not make your cooking or water taste of iron. After each use, remove the Fish from the pot, clean it, dry it thoroughly, and store it in a dry place. This helps deter the formation of rust. Should rust form, it is easy to remove and completely harmless. Simply scrub the Fish with soap and water, or lemon juice, and dry thoroughly.
Is the Lucky Iron Fish Safe for Women with Heavy Menstrual Flow?
Yes. The Lucky Iron Fish releases a gentle dose of iron and is safe for most individuals. In fact, the Fish may be the ideal iron supplement for women suffering from heavy menstrual blood loss, as it will not cause side effects that compound menstrual discomfort, like stomach cramping.
Research has confirmed that, when used as directed, the Fish delivers iron without the risk of iron overload. The only way overload would occur is by intentional misuse (e.g., boiling multiple Fish in a single litre of water for more than ten minutes). Should you ever have questions about how to properly use the Lucky Iron Fish, consult our website.
Those with Hemochromatosis should not use the Lucky Iron Fish. This genetic disorder makes it difficult for the body to process iron and can lead to serious health complications. Only your doctor can tell you whether you have this condition.
As you would with any new supplement, consult your doctor before using the Fish.
